Biography
Derek John Newark (8 June 1933 – 11 August 1998) was an English actor whose career spanned television, film and the stage. After service with the Coldstream Guards and the Royal Artillery, he left the Army to train at RADA. Through the 1960s and 70s he became a familiar face on British TV in series such as The Baron, The Avengers and Z-Cars, played Det. Insp. Tucker in Barlow, appeared in Doctor Who (An Unearthly Child and later Inferno), and turned up as the belligerent ex-paratrooper Spooner in Rising Damp. On film he was Sean Connery’s hard-nosed colleague Jessard in The Offence (1972).
Newark spent much of the 1970s at the National Theatre on the South Bank, a mainstay of Bill Bryden’s company at the Cottesloe. He was Bottom in A Midsummer Night’s Dream, originated Shelley Levene in the UK premiere of Glengarry Glen Ross, played Malcolm in Bedroom Farce (which moved to the West End and Broadway), and created the role of Roote in Harold Pinter’s The Hothouse under the playwright’s direction. Later television included Juliet Bravo, Inside the Third Reich (as Martin Bormann) and the Channel 4 play Hollywood Hits Chiswick. He died in West London of a heart attack related to liver failure.
