Biography
Nigel Lambert (11 May 1944 – 10 September 2024) was an English actor whose work ranged from stage and screen to prolific voice performance. He was widely recognised as the narrator of the first series of the BBC spoof science show Look Around You and as Merle Ambrose in the MMORPG Wizard101.
Born in Southend-on-Sea, Essex, Lambert began acting at twelve. He trained at the Arts Educational Trust School in Piccadilly, spent a short period at the Italia Conti Stage School, joined repertory in Cork, and completed formal training at RADA. Early professional years took him through repertory companies in Ireland and Northampton and to the Royal National Theatre, after which he worked steadily in radio and television and was also a member of Hatch End Players.
On screen he appeared in The Avengers episode “The £50,000 Breakfast” (1967) and played athlete Ken Sparten in the 1969 sci-fi horror film Scream and Scream Again. Television and advertising brought notable voice roles, including Mr Curry in The Adventures of Paddington Bear and “Papa” in the Dolmio commercials. He featured in UFO (“Computer Affair”) and contributed extensively to Marshall Cavendish’s Story Teller partwork, providing children’s stories on cassette.
Lambert recorded more than fifty BBC audiobooks. In the world of cult TV he portrayed Hardin in Doctor Who: The Leisure Hive (1980), later voicing the Priest Triangle in the 2021 episodes “War of the Sontarans” and “Once, Upon Time,” and he appeared in the debut episode of Blake’s 7, “The Way Back” (1978), as a computer operative. His death, at the age of 80, was announced on 11 September 2024.
