After moving to the United Kingdom in the 1930s, he became a regular presence in British features and TV dramas from the 1940s onward, and later turned up in Hollywood productions during the 1960s.
He was often cast as German officers or officials. Audiences may remember him as Colonel Weissner in Where Eagles Dare (1968), and from Carve Her Name with Pride (1958), The Guns of Navarone (1961), The Heroes of Telemark (1965), and an uncredited appearance as the psychologist in Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory (1971). On television, he made two appearances in The Saint and played Dr. Hauser in “Departure and Arrival,” the opening episode of the BBC science-fiction series Moonbase 3 (1973).
