Biography

Eddie Powell (9 March 1927 – 11 August 2000) was a British stuntman and actor whose career spanned nearly four decades and included work on some of the most celebrated adventure and horror films of the 20th century. Born in London, he became one of the key figures behind the scenes at Hammer Studios, known for his athleticism, precision, and reliability in dangerous on-screen moments.

Powell began his film work in the 1950s and soon became the regular stunt double for actor Christopher Lee, performing in numerous Hammer horror productions. Among his credited and uncredited appearances were Daleks’ Invasion Earth 2150 A.D. (1966), in which he played Thompson, and The Mummy’s Shroud (1967), where he appeared under heavy costume and makeup as the Mummy itself. He was also seen in The Devil Rides Out (1968) as the eerie Goat of Mendes, further establishing his reputation for mastering complex physical performances within demanding roles.

Beyond Hammer’s gothic sets, Powell’s talents brought him to major international productions. He contributed to several James Bond films and performed stunts in cinematic landmarks such as Alien (1979) and Aliens (1986), portraying the terrifying extraterrestrial creatures on screen. His work extended into blockbusters like Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989), Batman (1989), and Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves (1991), showcasing his ability to adapt to the evolving scale and technical sophistication of modern action filmmaking.

Powell’s life in cinema was closely intertwined with his family—he was married to Rosemary Burrows, a wardrobe mistress for Hammer Studios, and was the brother of fellow stuntman Joe Powell. Known for his professionalism and understated presence, Eddie Powell earned lasting respect among peers and fans for his courage and craftsmanship. He passed away in Berkshire on 11 August 2000 at the age of 73, leaving behind a legacy defined by both his skill and the unforgettable moments he helped bring to life on screen.
