Burg Hohenwerfen

The Filming Locations

Although Where Eagles Dare is set in the high Alps of southern Bavaria, much of the film was brought to life in carefully chosen locations across Austria. These places did more than stand in for a fictional landscape — they helped define the film’s visual identity and sense of realism.

The medieval fortress of Burg Hohenwerfen became the imposing Schloss Adler, its sheer rock faces and isolated position lending the story a tangible sense of danger. Nearby Werfen served as a practical base for location shooting, with surrounding roads, valleys, and slopes repeatedly used to suggest perilous approaches and escapes. Further east, Ebensee provided dramatic lakeside and mountain settings for some of the film’s most memorable sequences.

Together, these locations formed a cohesive physical world, grounding the film’s elaborate plot in a striking and believable landscape.
